How to avoid frozen pipes this winter

Cold weather - particularly sever frosts - can cause pipes to freeze, making them prone to split when the ice inside them expands. This can cause a lot of water damage when pipes, fittings and hot water cylinders leak.

We've put together a few tips to help you avoid the hassle and cost of frost burst. Did you know the insurance council stated the average repair cost from a frost burst is $5000?!

1. Most plumbing interruptions are due to freezing in the ceiling, so it pays to install a heat source with a frost stat in the ceiling or leave a gap in the ceiling manhole to let some heat into the roof space .

2. Make sure you know where your water toby is at the property boundary (especially if it snows). Sketch the location of your toby & stick a copy to your hot water cylinder.

3. The most important part of keeping your plumbing safe, is keeping your home warm. Investing in heating for your home can really save you money in the long run, and help you avoid unnecessary plumbing nightmares.

If you wake up one morning and find your pipes are frozen, just shut off the water supply outside and contact us so we can have a plumber out to fix the problem right away.
